<p>Le <time class="nowrap" datetime="1801-05-21" data-sort-value="1801-05-21">21 mai 1801</time>, il épouse à <a href="Malaga" title="Malaga">Malaga</a> Catherine de Grevigné y Gallegos (<a href="1730" title="1730">1730</a>–<a href="1823" title="1823">1823</a>), grand-tante de l’impératrice <a href="Eug%C3%A9nie_de_Montijo" title="Eugénie de Montijo">Eugénie de Montijo</a>. Il est le père de <a href="Ferdinand_de_Lesseps" title="Ferdinand de Lesseps">Ferdinand</a> et de <a href="Jules_de_Lesseps" title="Jules de Lesseps">Jules de Lesseps</a>.

</p><p>Il est d'abord consul de France au <a href="Maroc" title="Maroc">Maroc</a>. Il rejoint l'armée d'Égypte en <a href="1800" title="1800">1800</a> en tant que commissaire des relations commerciales. Il est ensuite nommé commissaire général à <a href="Livourne" title="Livourne">Livourne</a> (où il fonde la <a href="Loge_ma%C3%A7onnique" title="Loge maçonnique">loge maçonnique</a> <i>Napoléon</i>, à l'obédience du <a href="Grand_Orient_de_France" title="Grand Orient de France">Grand Orient de France</a>) puis commissaire impérial à <a href="Corfou" title="Corfou">Corfou</a> de <time class="nowrap" datetime="1810-05" data-sort-value="1810-05">mai 1810</time> à <time class="nowrap" datetime="1814-06" data-sort-value="1814-06">juin 1814</time>, sous <a href="Fran%C3%A7ois-Xavier_Donzelot" title="François-Xavier Donzelot">Donzelot</a>.

</p><p>Durant les <a href="Cent-Jours" title="Cent-Jours">Cent-Jours</a>, il est brièvement <a href="Liste_des_pr%C3%A9fets_du_Cantal" title="Liste des préfets du Cantal">préfet du Cantal</a> du 6 au <time class="nowrap" datetime="1815-04-15" data-sort-value="1815-04-15">15 avril 1815</time>, avant d'être nommé commissaire extraordinaire provisoire dans la <abbr class="abbr" title="Dix-neuvième">19<sup>e</sup></abbr> division militaire, <time class="nowrap" datetime="1815-05-16" data-sort-value="1815-05-16">16 mai 1815</time>. Après Waterloo, il est remplacé le <time class="nowrap" datetime="07-14" data-sort-value="07-14">14 juillet</time>.

Le <time class="nowrap" datetime="1819-09-16" data-sort-value="1819-09-16">16 septembre 1819</time>, il est nommé consul-général à <a href="Philadelphie" title="Philadelphie">Philadelphie</a> ; le <time class="nowrap" datetime="1821-05-01" data-sort-value="1821-05-01"><abbr class="abbr" title="premier">1<sup>er</sup></abbr> mai 1821</time>, il est nommé à <a href="Alep" title="Alep">Alep</a> en Syrie ; enfin, le <time class="nowrap" datetime="1827-08-03" data-sort-value="1827-08-03">3 août 1827</time>, il est nommé à <a href="Tunis" title="Tunis">Tunis</a>, où il décède. Il est inhumé à <a href="Tunis" title="Tunis">Tunis</a> avant d'être déplacé à <a href="Carthage" title="Carthage">Carthage</a><sup id="cite_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>.

<p>Mathieu de Lesseps est fait chevalier de l'ordre royal de la Légion d'honneur en 1818, promu au grade d'officier dans l'ordre le <time class="nowrap" datetime="1821-05-01" data-sort-value="1821-05-01"><abbr class="abbr" title="premier">1<sup>er</sup></abbr> mai 1821</time> puis fait officier de l'ordre le <time class="nowrap" datetime="2022-02-19" data-sort-value="2022-02-19">19 février 2022</time><sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>.
